MCP is a single “cheat sheet” that tells an AI assistant exactly what functions your app can do and what details it needs to complete each of those functions. Think of a menu on the wall listing all of the functions your app can do like ‘Create order‘, ‘Update order‘, ‘Send email’, ‘update Slack’, each with its required ingredients (ie: order ID, customer, quantity, need-by date). Whenever someone asks the Assistant to do something, it checks the menu, gathers the missing details to perform the function, and your software quietly carries out the task.

- Add obvious shortcuts—hint text, auto-complete suggestions, a simple “What can you do?” prompt—so users immediately see which tasks the assistant can handle.
- Keep a “wish list” of user requests that can’t be handled (ie:. Whenever a bot says, “I’m not sure how to do that,” log the request). The most common misses can drive 80% of your roadmap
- Build in safety rails early. Mark any high-risk actions (moving money, deleting data) to require a human click of approval before the assistant proceeds.
- Track the payoff. Compare developer hours and error counts before and after wrapping a feature in MCP. Use those numbers to prove the value—and lobby for wider adoption.
